Every spring we get the same call: "Weeds are growing through my pavers, can you spray them?" We can, but spraying is a band aid. The fix is the sand between the pavers, and most installs we look at have the wrong kind or not enough.
Why Weeds Grow in Paver Joints
Wind blows dust into the joints, rain packs it down, and seeds catch in it. Plain mason's sand stays loose and seeds love it. Polymeric sand binds into a near solid joint when it gets wet, and that's the long term answer.
The Three Layer Approach
- Resand with polymeric. Sweep it in dry, mist to activate the binder.
- Pre emergent in February. Get it down before the first warm spell. A granular product with prodiamine or trifluralin blocks seedlings for 4 to 6 months.
- Spot spray survivors while they're small, with 30 percent vinegar or a glyphosate product.
What About Boiling Water & Salt?
Boiling water only gets one weed at a time. Salt kills everything within 6 feet, then seeps under the pavers and breaks down the base. Stick with polymeric sand and pre emergent.
