From mid June through September, the valley trades dry heat for a handful of fast, violent storms. Most yards sit on caliche, which sheds water like a driveway, so the rain runs. Where it runs decides whether your patio shrugs off the season or heaves, puddles, and loses its joints.
Why Pavers Already Win Here
A slab is one rigid piece. Water gets under it, the caliche shifts, the slab cracks, and a cracked slab is a demolition job. Pavers are hundreds of small pieces on a compacted base, so water that finds a weak spot moves one paver, and one paver resets in an afternoon.
Slope Is the Whole Game
We design to a minimum 1 percent fall and prefer 2 percent on patios and driveways. That's about a quarter inch of drop per foot, always pitched away from the house. Most valley lots are graded flat, so the slope has to be built into the base, or you get a shallow lake in the middle of the patio two days after the rain.
When Slope Isn't Enough
Yards boxed in by walls or a neighbor's raised pad need a drain, usually one of these:
- Channel drain. A long grate across a driveway or at the bottom of a slope. It's the first pick where a driveway meets the garage.
- Area drain. A square inlet at the low corner of a patio, tied into buried pipe.
- French drain. A gravel trench with perforated pipe along a wall or fence where water pools.
Every drain needs a legal place to empty, usually the street and never a neighbor's lot. Getting that outlet right is half of what you pay a contractor for.
Protect the Joints Protect the Base
Hard flow pulls sand out of the joints, the pavers start to rock, and the base washes out. Polymeric sand that binds as it cures and solid edge restraints are the two guards. If your joints are open and sandy heading into monsoon season, resanding is a small job that prevents a big one.
