Every August somebody loves their new patio at 9am and can't set foot on it by 4. The air reads 105, and dark hardscape in full sun runs 40 to 50 degrees hotter than that. Skin starts to burn around 120, so the color you pick is more than a style call here.
Travertine Wins the Heat Test
Light travertine is the coolest surface we install, and it isn't close. The cream color reflects sun, and the stone gives heat back to the air faster than a dense slab, so it runs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than dark concrete in the same yard. That's why it's around more valley pools than anything else.
Pavers Color Does the Work
Sand, buff, and light gray pavers stay comfortable. Charcoal doesn't. If you love the dark look, run a light field where people walk and sit, and use the dark tone as a border.
The Turf Trap
Artificial turf is usually the hottest surface in the yard, past 150 in afternoon sun. Put it where it catches afternoon shade, pick a lighter blade, and hose it down before the kids or the dog go out. A quick rinse drops the temperature fast.
Don't Forget the Rock
Dark decorative rock soaks up sun all day and throws it back at your walls after sundown, right when the air conditioner is trying to catch up. Lighter desert tans and golds stay cooler, so look at those in the rock catalog before you default to charcoal.
Cooling a Yard You Already Have
- Add shade. A cover, pergola, or tree drops the surface under it 30 to 40 degrees. It's the biggest fix by far.
- Put in water. In dry air, a water feature really does cool the spot where you sit.
- Rinse before you use it. Two minutes with the hose buys a comfortable evening.
- Go lighter when you reseal. A dark, wet look finish soaks up sun.
